Research Learning - CRAFT Model Pt. 3

The "research" aspect of this model is very different from any research that I have done before. I usually think of research as reading through journal articles or conducting an empirical research study. I have learned through several trips to Mart with Paula that the type of research I am used to is NOT going to work with this project.

During our trips, I have noticed Paula doing her research. She is always going to meet with someone or talking to a community member on the street. The best way I have found to learn about Mart and its residents is to talk with the people who live there. It is such a simple idea, but it was somewhat difficult to grasp. What's that you say? I don't have to conduct a 20 page literature review to understand the dynamics of community? Of course, scientific data and peer-reviewed journal articles are important, but not as important as the relationships we build with the residents of Mart.

I have really enjoyed the experience of this type of research. This entire project has forced me to put aside many of the preconceived notions that I had about working with communities. By talking with Mart residents and building relationships within the community, I have begun to better understand the processes of community building and development.
