Action Learning - CRAFT Model Pt. 2

The "action" piece of the CRAFT model has been difficult for the art co-op group. Building a co-op from the ground up is a daunting task and all of the steps involved can seem overwhelming. At this point in time, I think it is difficult to know what the end product will look like. I have had to shift my thinking and start looking at the project as a process rather than a project with a clear end result.

Last week, Anna, Paula, and I met with several Mart resident who were interested in the art co-op. During the meeting, we talked with them about what a co-op is and the basic steps to starting a co-op. It was clear that many of the residents seemed overwhelmed with the idea that they would be running the co-op. However, by breaking down the steps to building a co-op, the residents were able to come up with a short-term goal. They decided that they wanted to organize a gathering at the co-op after the homecoming parade in a few weeks. They are going to make and sell pie and use the co-op as a gathering space for people to come and mingle.

I think this small action has taught me to focus on the "low hanging fruit" especially during the initial phases of a project. Once we start reaching some of our smaller goals, we will be able to work toward some of the larger action pieces.

  1. I like how you are using reflexivity in your assessment, it really is about the process for all of us, and the learning is in the doing. The pie event will be illuminating regardless of what happens.

  2. I love this flyer! Also, a great reminder on how important the small steps are, especially at the beginning of the process.
